Château La Nerthe and the Cassagnes de La Nerthe

Château La Nerthe produces eminent red and white wines from the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation. Les Cassagnes de La Nerthe come from our vines in Sérignan du Comtat and Prieuré de Montézargues in Tavel. These wines reveal our determination to attain the highest quality as measured by their expression of elegance and finesse.

The Red Wines

The complexity is achieved by the complementarity of the grape varieties and the excellence of the terroirs. Winemaking without artifice promotes length and finesse rather than power and concentration. Ageing in large casks, wooden vats and barrels confers a superb balance between freshness and mature tannins, resulting in wines with great ageing potential.

Red Wines

Château La Nerthe
Châteauneuf du Pape

Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault dominate the blend and give birth to an intense wine with extraordinary ageing potential. The colour is a dense garnet while the intense bouquet reveals aromas of cherry and wild strawberry with notes of soft spices and garrigue. The tannins have a soft, delicate and suave texture.

Château La Nerthe - Cuvée des Cadettes
Châteauneuf du Pape

A selection from our oldest vineyard plots produces La Cuvée des Cadettes where Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah are fermented together in the traditional way. Foudre and Barrel maturing in the sixteenth century cellars lasts from 14 to 16 months. Les Cadettes expresses the elegance, power, breeding and balance of this unique terroir.

Château La Nerthe - Les Clavelles
Châteauneuf du Pape

Les Clavelles is the name of a plot of 100 % Grenache vines on the western slope of the famous plateau of La Crau. The soil is typical with its worn flat pebbles, its red clay and its excellent exposure to the sun. This plot does not suffer from drought and is well-protected from the mistral. The wine has frank, explosive, vibrant fruit but with a less jammy character than a lot of pure grenache cuvées. Its specificity comes from simple observation of the equilibrium found here, the clear evidence revealed by tasting the grapes and acknowledging the plenitude of this patch of vines that we call Clavelles, (“keys” in local terms). It might appear that this plot, this wine, gave us the keys to what is unique in Châteauneuf – like the keys of Saint-Pierre found on the coat of arms of Châteauneuf du Pape.

The wine is aromatic and delicate with a mix of red fruit, spices and garrigue in the bouquet. Racy and elegant in the mouth without heaviness, it has a contained, unpretentious power and there is great length. It is marked by a true purity of style and brilliance. This is expression without elaboration, showing what the grape variety in harmony with its terroir can offer in terms of balance and elegance.

Les Cassagnes de La Nerthe Red
Côtes du Rhône Villages

Les Cassagnes de La Nerthe are from the Domaine de La Renjarde in Sérignan du Comtat. This is a property of the Richard family, as is the famous Chateau La Nerthe in Châteauneuf du Pape. It is farmed with the same demanding standards in the quest for quality. This wine is a blend of organic Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre grapes produced from sandy and limestone soils. It exhales ripe and fleshy fruit aromas with notes of red fruit and sweet spices. A wine to enjoy from its early years.

Château La Nerthe
Châteauneuf du Pape

The personality of the wine is achieved by blending 4 grape varieties : Grenache blanc, Roussanne, Clairette and Bourboulenc. The crop is harvested at optimum maturity to capture the natural tension and the singular, mineral expression of the grape varieties.

Château La Nerthe - Clos de Beauvenir
Châteauneuf du Pape

Clos de Beauvenir is named after the ancient Tulle de Villefranche bastide. It is an old castle garden, protected from the wind by plane trees that also create some shade during the day – much appreciated by the Roussanne vines forming the major part of the planting. The Grenache blanc is vinified and matured separately, bringing the sought after freshness and volume to this great white wine, known for its elegance and lingering mineral allure.

La Fine du Château La Nerthe

For several decades Château La Nerthe has produced a brandy known as “La Fine” in the pure tradition of Châteauneuf du Pape’s fine wine distillation. Furthermore it comes exclusively from distillation of the Château’s own white wine. The wine is first bottle-aged in our cellars before being selected for distillation, we then perform a triple distillation in order to obtain the finest, most delicate aromas possible. Our aim is to capture the essence of the old white wines that have given Château La Nerthe its reputation. Thus La Fine from Château La Nerthe is exceptional. La Fine of Chateau La Nerthe is the only Fine (Brandy) which is still produced in Châteauneuf du Pape. The other producers are making Marc.

Due to its origin, its extraction, its specifications and its maturation of no less than 10 years in oak barrels, La Fine du Château La Nerthe is the pure essence of our wines, the quintessence of our work and, in the end, a little of ourselves.
